Poster sizes in cm and inches: a practical guide

All poster guides

Choose the physical size first, then check the crop and the frame. A poster can have the right width and still be the wrong shape for your frame or artwork.

These are conversion examples, not a promise that every motif is available in every format. The size selector on the product page shows what you can actually order. For landscape orientation, swap width and height. One inch equals exactly 2.54 cm.

Measure the wall and the frame opening

Measure the area you want the print to occupy, including the frame if you plan to use one. Use removable paper or tape to mark that rectangle on the wall, then look at it from the distance where you normally sit or stand. For an existing frame, check the print opening or the manufacturer’s specified picture size rather than measuring the outside edge.

A passe-partout reduces the visible opening. Check both the print size it accepts and how much of the printed border or image it will cover. An A4 frame is not automatically an 8 × 10 inch frame: A4 measures 21 × 29.7 cm, while 8 × 10 inches is 20.32 × 25.4 cm.

Why changing size can change the crop

Aspect ratio describes the relationship between width and height. A 12 × 18 inch rectangle is 2:3; an 8 × 10 inch rectangle is 4:5. Fitting the same artwork edge to edge into both can remove a different amount near the edges. In the product preview, check important details such as faces, text and architectural features after changing the size.

A size-specific mockup helps you compare shape and crop. It is not a reliable ruler for furniture shown in a staged room. Use the actual measurements for your wall and frame.

If you upload your own image

Pixel dimensions matter more than the file size in megabytes. For a planning example, a 6 × 8 inch image at 300 pixels per inch is 1800 × 2400 pixels. Enlarging a small file does not recreate missing detail. The design studio checks your selected product and placement; inspect its quality notice and crop before ordering. Available sizes can be limited by the original file.
